Substernal Esophageal Reconstruction with the Segments of Colon

Abstract
A clinical study on 18 cases of surgical patient with benign esophageal stricture which caused by lye ingestion, who were admitted to the dept. of chest surgery, Seoul Choong-Boo City Hospital during the period from Sept. 1964 to Dec. 1965 was presented.
The diagnosis of cases was made by various clinical examination and laboratory findings, mainly by X-ray studies.
The patients age was ranged from 3 to 53 years and sex ratio of female and male was 15:3.
The obstructed levels of esophgus are as follow; hypopharynx in four cases, midcervical in seven cases and thoracic in seven cases.
The utilized segments of colon were right colon in three cases, left colon in eight cases and transverse colon in seven cases. There was no operative mortality, however, post-opera-tive complication of esophageal fistula was occurred in three cases. among one case, was revised successfully. A mechanical small bowel obstruction was occurred in two cases, moreover, additional complications were atelectasis, prneumothorax due to pleural tear, hoarseness and wound distruption of abdomen was occurred.
for the functional view point, swallowing and passage were satisfactory after 2 months of operation.
